CAR HIRE LOCATIONS
ACROSS MONTENEGRO

PODGORICA
Airport · City · Capital
Montenegro's main international gateway and our busiest location. The rental desk is in arrivals — staff meet every flight, including late-night ones. Podgorica is a 10-minute drive from the city centre and about an hour from the coast; most people are heading south, and the road is fast.
from €18 per day
TIVAT
Airport · Bay of Kotor
Tivat handles the bulk of summer charter flights, and it puts you right at the bay. Kotor is ten minutes away, Budva thirty. Pick up in the terminal — the desk is clearly signed. July and August get busy, so online booking in advance gets you better availability and price.
from €20 per day
🏖
BUDVA
Riviera · Beach Hub
Budva is where most visitors end up, and it's a great central base. Drive north to Kotor (25 mins), south past Petrovac to Bar, or cut inland toward Skadar Lake. Our office is open daily — walk-ins are fine outside summer peak, but a reservation is smarter in July.
from €22 per day
🏰
KOTOR
UNESCO · Old Town
Kotor's walled old town is a UNESCO site, and you'll want a car the moment you've seen it — the serpentine road up to Lovćen has 25 switchbacks and views that are genuinely extraordinary. We keep a selection of compact and SUV vehicles here; the old town itself has no parking, so we'll point you to the right lot.
from €22 per day
HERCEG NOVI
Bay Entrance · Croatia Border
At the mouth of the bay, Herceg Novi is often the first stop for people arriving from Croatia. We can add a cross-border permit if you need to go back — just ask at booking. The drive around the bay from here through Kotor is one of the best short routes in Europe.
from €21 per day
🚢
BAR
Port City · Ferry Terminal
The Bar ferry port connects to Bari in Italy — a lot of people arrive this way and want wheels straight off the boat. We can meet you at the port or you can pick up in town. From Bar, you're 45 minutes from Budva and the coast road north is genuinely scenic.
from €20 per day

Road Rules

DRIVING IN MONTENEGRO
- WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

🚦
Driving Licence
EU licences are accepted as-is. Non-EU visitors should bring an IDP alongside their national licence — it's a simple document to get before you travel. Minimum age is 21 for most categories; some larger vehicles require 23 or 25. We'll tell you at booking which applies to the car you've chosen.
Speed Limits - Montenegro Roads
50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 on open roads, 100–130 on the motorway. Radar is used and fines are collected on the spot. Nothing you wouldn't expect anywhere in Europe — just worth knowing before you get on the coast road and feel tempted.
🛣
Road Conditions
The main coastal and capital routes are well-maintained. Mountain roads are a different story — narrow, steep in places, and sometimes with sheer drops on one side. They're also spectacular. If you're going north of Kolašin or into the Prokletije range, take an SUV and give yourself more time than the map suggests.
🛡
Car Hire Insurance Policy
CDW is standard on every rental — it covers the car against accidental damage with an excess amount. The excess varies by vehicle class. Zero-excess cover is available as an add-on; tyres and glass can be added separately. We go through it all clearly at pick-up, not buried in small print.
TOP DRIVING TIPS - MONTENEGRO ROADS
Always carry your licence, passport, and rental agreement — police do stop foreign-registered cars and ask to see documents. The bay road is narrower than Google Street View suggests; slow down on blind corners. Fill up before heading into the mountains — petrol stations disappear fast once you leave the main north-south route. And if you're driving to Lovćen from Kotor: take your time on the bends, but don't rush the view at the top either.
CROSS-BORDER DRIVING FROM MONTENEGRO
A lot of people want to make at least a day trip into Croatia or drive through to Dubrovnik. It's allowed, but you need to request a cross-border permit when you book — don't try to cross without it. The fee is small and flat. Not all vehicles qualify for cross-border; economy cars usually do, and we'll confirm when you book. Herceg Novi and Bar are the most used crossing points.

EXPLORE DESTINATIONS
BY HIRE CAR IN MONTENEGRO

🏔
DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK
About two hours from Podgorica, past Žabljak — one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Balkans. The Black Lake, the Tara Canyon (Europe's deepest), the ski runs that empty out in summer. No real public transport up there; a car is the only practical way in. Take an SUV.
🌊
BUDVA RIVIERA
From Jaz Beach north of Budva all the way south through Petrovac — the riviera has a dozen beaches, most of them off roads with no bus service. Sveti Stefan is worth stopping for even if you're not staying. The drive takes an afternoon; give it a whole day if you can.
🏛
BAY OF KOTOR LOOP
The full loop — Herceg Novi, around the bay to Kotor, then up the serpentine to Lovćen and back down the other side. Give it a full day; there are too many stops worth making to rush it. One of the best drives in Europe, genuinely.
LOVĆEN NATIONAL PARK
Twenty-five hairpins from sea level up to the Montenegrin heartland. The village of Njeguši halfway up is famous for its prošek wine and smoked ham — stop there. The Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš at the top has views over three countries on a clear day. Don't rush this road.
🦅
LAKE SKADAR
Thirty minutes from Podgorica Airport and barely on the tourist radar. The lake is enormous — shared with Albania — with medieval monastery ruins, pelicans, and wine villages along the northern shore. Most of the interesting spots are on unmarked side roads. No bus gets near them.
🏖
ADA BOJANA & BAR
The far south sees fewer tourists and has a different feel — Ulcinj's old town, the wild Ada Bojana island at the Albanian border, the long sandy beaches with no sunbeds in sight. Bar itself connects by overnight ferry to Bari, Italy; a lot of travellers start or end their trip here. We can do drop-offs at Bar port.
Rental Information

IMPORTANT CAR HIRE
INFORMATION - MONTENEGRO

📋 BOOKING INFORMATION

Select your pick-up point, dates, and car type — takes about two minutes online. Confirmation by email, and you can modify or cancel up to 24 hours before pick-up at no charge. For groups of three or more vehicles, or extended business rentals, contact us directly and we'll put together a better deal than the standard online rates.

📋 RENTAL REQUIREMENTS

You need a valid driving licence (EU licences accepted; non-EU visitors need an IDP too), a passport or ID, and a credit card for the deposit hold. The deposit varies by vehicle class and is released within a few days of return. Minimum age is 21 for standard cars; some categories require 23 or 25 — the booking page will flag this for the car you select. Everything is confirmed online; no pre-visit to the desk needed.

📋 INSURANCE & POLICY

CDW is included as standard on every rental. The base policy has an excess; what's typically not covered without an upgrade: tyres, glass, underbody damage. Zero-excess cover eliminates the excess entirely and is added at booking — not pushed on you at the counter. If you're crossing into another country, additional insurance applies; we'll tell you the exact cost when you add the cross-border permit.

What Customers Say

CAR HIRE REVIEWS
- MONTENEGRO

★★★★★
"Landed at Podgorica at 11pm, the desk was still open, car was ready in about ten minutes. Clean, new-ish VW — exactly what we booked. Drove the whole week, Podgorica to Kotor to Budva and back. Not a single issue. Very straightforward, no hidden extras at pick-up."
James R. · UK · Podgorica Airport Hire
★★★★★
"Picked up at Tivat, dropped off in Budva — no fuss about the one-way. The price we paid online was the price we paid at the desk. Did the full bay loop, Lovćen, drove south to Bar. The guy at pick-up gave us a lot of useful tips about the mountain roads which saved us some stress."
Anna M. · Germany · Tivat Airport Rental
★★★★☆
"Collected in Budva, spent four days exploring the riviera and a day up at Kotor and Lovćen. Car was in good condition. The road from Kotor up the mountain is intense but worth every hairpin. We didn't do the zero-excess and nothing happened to the car anyway — but the price was fair and we'd do the same again."

Common Questions

CAR HIRE FAQ
- MONTENEGRO

How do I hire a car in Montenegro?
Book online — select location, dates, car type, confirm. Takes about two minutes and you get an email straight away. At pick-up bring your licence, passport, and the credit card you paid with (needed for the deposit hold). Walk-ins are sometimes possible outside peak season, but pre-booking gives you guaranteed availability and a locked-in rate.
What is the cost of car hire in Montenegro per day?
Economy cars start around €18/day; compact from €22; SUVs from €35; luxury from €65. Summer (July–August) runs about 20–30% higher than shoulder season. All prices include CDW insurance and unlimited kilometres within Montenegro. The price you see at checkout is the full price — no taxes added at the end.
Can I rent a car at Podgorica Airport?
Yes. The rental desk is in the arrivals hall — follow the signs. Europcar, Sixt, and local operators all have counters there. Pick-up takes around 15 minutes once the paperwork's done. Book ahead, especially in summer; availability at the airport can run low during peak season.
Is there car hire at Tivat Airport?
Yes. The desk is in the terminal building at Tivat. Tivat is the most convenient pick-up point if you're heading to Kotor, Budva, or Herceg Novi. From €20/day including insurance. The terminal is small — you won't miss the desk. Online booking gets you better rates and guaranteed vehicle category.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Montenegro?
Driving licence, passport or national ID, and a credit card for the deposit hold. EU licences are fine on their own; non-EU visitors should also bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21 for most cars. Some vehicles (luxury, minivans, large SUVs) require 23 or 25 — the booking system flags this automatically for the car you select.
Can I drive my hire car from Montenegro to other countries?
Yes, with a cross-border permit — request it at booking time, not on the day. Croatia, Bosnia, Albania, and Serbia are all covered. The permit adds a small flat fee, not a daily charge. Not every vehicle qualifies (some economy cars are excluded); we'll confirm during booking which cars are eligible for your destination.
